Virtual Earth Month – re:loom Feature

April 7, 2020

As a part of Emory’s #VirtualEarthMonth, we are highlighting organizations who were planning to participate in Emory’s on-campus Earth Festival this year. Learn more about these #EarthMonthLeaders throughout April.

First, we want to feature a long-time partner, re:loom – a program of the Initiative for Affordable Housing (IAH), a nonprofit organization in Decatur, Georgia. Founded in 1990 with one home and one homeless family, IAH’s mission is to provide permanent, affordable housing to homeless and low-income families in metro Atlanta. They provide rigorous, holistic social services program empowers individuals to reach personal goals and achieve independence.

re:loom grew naturally from the work to help adults secure and maintain jobs. re:loom helps individuals address obstacles to employment through paid on-site job training and leadership opportunities. Weavers design and produce handmade products and lead a team of weavehouse volunteers. With a stable salary, 100% healthcare coverage, and opportunities to engage in the operation of the weavehouse, employees gain a financial foundation, leadership skills, and a sense of purpose and accomplishment. re:loom upcycles uniforms from Emory, keeping them out of landfills and turning them into artisan products to sell.

IAH continues to provide safe and affordable housing to over 350 formerly homeless and low-income families, but to protect the safety of re:loom’s employees, the weavehouse and on-site store selling the beautiful, woven, upcycled products is closed temporarily. You can still learn more about re:loom and IAH and support their mission here: www.reloom.org/.
