Sustainability Kicks-Off at Emory with Weekly Farmers Market and Student Sustainability Showcase

Each year, the Office of Sustainability Initiatives likes to welcome new and returning students into Emory’s longstanding culture of sustainability.

On Tuesday, August 26th, from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm in McDonough Plaza, Emory held the first Farmers Market of the semester. From our incredible vendors to the fresh and local produce abound at the market, incoming students got a taste of what makes Tuesdays on campus so special.

Our first market also gave visitors the opportunity to act as sustainable stewards through acquiring reusable bamboo utensils in support of Emory’s Break Free From Plastic pledge. Those who bring these utensils and reduce their use of disposable utensils at future markets will receive a punch card to win prizes from the Office of Sustainability Initiatives.

From 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm, the Plastic Free Emory and the Office of Sustainability Initiatives co-hosted the annual Student Sustainability Showcase on McDonough Field. The showcase is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about the many passionate Emory sustainable-related organizations and how to get involved with their work.

Living more sustainably, just like your academic career, is a journey. You can build sustainable habits and awareness by practicing the following:

  1.  Carry reusable water bottles and utensils instead of disposable alternatives.
  2.  Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
  3.  Unplug your electronics when they are not in use.
  4.  Properly sort your waste in residential halls, dining halls, and classrooms.
  5.  Consider reducing your consumption of red meat and explore plant-based options.
  6.  Certify your events for sustainability using our Sustainable Events Certification Form.
  7.  Certify your office or laboratory space with our Green Labs and Green Offices programs.
  8. Connect with nature through a walk in Lullwater Preserve or an hour volunteering in our Educational Gardens.
  9.  Practice gratitude and self-care. Wellbeing is a part of sustainability as well.
