Any of our colleagues in 1599 can submit an application to be certified as a Green Office. Green Offices is a voluntary OSI program that certifies, celebrates, and supports offices and departments that prioritize sustainability in their culture and operations: from energy and water efficiency, to recycling and procurement, to employee wellness. Certified Green Offices are also eligible to apply for up $5,000 of funding to support innovative sustainability programs through OSI’s Incentives Fund. Not ready to become a Green Office? Pursue a General Sustainability Award from OSI’s Incentive Funds, which offers up to $3,000 for any campus community member to implement ideas that advance sustainability on campus.

Wherever you’re coming from, there are plenty of options for green commuting to 1599. Consider biking, walking, taking the Emory Shuttle or MARTA bus, or car- or van-pooling. Save money, reduce stress, and earn cash rewards through the Georgia Commute Options program and app!
The Emory Shuttle CCTMA route can drop you off at Emory Conference Center Hotel, a short walk from 1599’s front doors. Visit the Transportation and Parking Services site to find your Emory Shuttle or MARTA route!
If you are (or want to become) a bicycle commuter, explore TPS resources for renting a bike or learning from a bike ambassador, and take advantage of the bike rack on the first level of the 1599 parking deck.
Emory subsidizes the cost of sustainable commuting up to 100%. Get in touch with TPS to register for sustainable commuter subsidies, request tailored commuting advice, and learn more!

Emory has a goal of achieving zero landfill waste on campus. Each floor of the 1599 Clifton Road building features at least two waste sorting stations, where you can sort your waste into green compost bins (for “organic” waste including food, paper-based food packaging and napkins, and marked-compostable bioplastic food packaging), blue recycling bins (for paper, plastic, and metals), and black landfill bins (for food-contaminated Styrofoam, chewing gum, and PPA like gloves and face masks). Desk-side waste bins are not serviced on Emory campus to encourage employees to properly sort their waste and increase landfill diversion.
1599 residents should also take advantage of the Hard-to-Recycle program station on the first floor lobby by the parking deck entrance, where the Emory community can recycle aerosol cans, batteries, CFL & LED light bulbs, clean Styrofoam (not food grade), glass bottles and jars, and ink and toner cartridges. The campus surrounding the 1599 building provides countless opportunities for enjoying the outdoors. Just a 10 minute walk away, you can visit Lullwater Preserve, Emory’s 150+ acre nature preserve featuring miles of walking and running trails, views of Lullwater House, and beautiful Candler Lake. If you’re more interested in gardening or local food production, volunteer at one of Emory’s educational gardens or visit the weekly Farmers Market on Tuesdays from 11-2 PM at McDonough Field. Explore the campus before or after work, on a long lunch break, or for a walking meeting! And if you’d like to meet some new friends, Healthy Emory leads a walking group from the 1599 lobby every Tuesday at noon.

Emory has a goal of achieving 50% energy and water use reduction. To do your part, remember to switch off lights, technology, and appliances when a room is not in use; to be conscious of reasonable water use in the kitchenette; to unplug your technology before long periods of disuse; and to avoid using any individual appliances like in-office coffee makers, printers, or space heaters.
Keep in mind that Emory’s thermostat policy aims to maintain temperatures between 68 and 76 degrees, so 1599 residents should plan ahead and dress in layers if the office runs a little warm or cold.

The Office of Sustainability Initiatives has launched its Break Free from Plastic Initiative with the goal of reducing the use of single-use plastic on campus. Reduce your use of plastic at 1599 by bringing a reusable water bottle to work and refilling it at one of the refill stations on each floor, bringing reusable dishware and cutlery to the office instead of single-use, and using the coffee machine on the second floor with your own mug instead of purchasing coffee in a single-use cup or using a Keurig. Don’t forget that nearby coffee shops including Kaldi’s Depot offer a discount to customers who bring their own reusable coffee cup!
