Sustainable Events Checklist & Certification |

In a program developed jointly by the Office of Sustainability, Emory Recycles and University Events, Emory University has recently launched a sustainable events certification program that is designed to guide event planners and organizers in creating an event that supports Emory's sustainability vision by reducing environmental and social impacts and, in many cases, reducing costs. The sustainable events certification guidelines outline best practices, but they are not a comprehensive list; event planners are encouraged to be creative and go beyond these guidelines when possible.
There are three tiers of sustainable events: blue, gold and green. If an event organizer is able to check at least two boxes under each category (e.g., event venue, etc.) then they will achieve blue level certification, three items will result in gold certification, and more than three items will give an event green level certification. The travel and guest accommodations category must be included only if applicable.
Sustainable event checklist is available here.
Event organizers can submit their checklists and receive approval to use the sustainable events certification logo on publicity and event materials. They may also borrow sustainable event banners to use at their event promoting their achievement to participants. Certified green events will be highlighted on the Office of Sustainability website, and an annual award will be given to the event planner with the most sustainable events.
Event organizers will submit their checklists to the Office of Sustainability Initiatives (emorysustainability@emory.edu) and receive approval to use the Sustainable Events Certification logo on publicity and event materials.
