Energy Awareness
Energy monitors have been installed in Emory's LEED certified residence halls so tenants can track energy consumption.

Emory's goal is to reduce energy use 25 percent per square foot by 2015 from 2005 levels.


Emory plans to achieve this goal through both operational changes, such as improving the efficiency of lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation, and behavioral change such as turning off lights, computers, and other simple steps individuals can take.

Emory has set specific goals for this program:
  • Assess the University by sector to determine how better to create closed loops for energy, water, and other basic systems.
  • Retrofit existing buildings to embody new technologies according to predetermined standards and to encourage new behaviors in harmony with sustainability goals.
  • Reduce average campus energy use by 25 percent per square foot by 2015.
  • Build all new and renovated structures to contribute to Emory’s leadership in green building standards.
  • Engage in sustainability education by broadening participation in building design and decision making and by engaging in post-construction learning opportunities.
Campus Services and the Office of Sustainability Initiatives will be key campus leaders in this effort.

Campus Services coordinates institution-wide and unit-based initiatives designed to conserve energy and reduce reliance on natural resources. This group also manages the Utility Reduction and Energy Conservation Plan designed to implement energy conservation measures and energy management of buildings and infrastructure systems.

A Utility Reduction and Energy Conservation team provides leadership, support and direction for University stakeholders engaged in conservation efforts.
