Oxford's East Village Residence HallEmory’s Oxford Residence Hall, East Village, was awarded the first place Build Georgia Award for best sustainable practices at the Association of General Contractors convention in June.

One distinctive feature of East Village's 'green' design that led to this honor is the innovative storm water system. Rainwater is collected from the roof and surrounding streets, using a series of aesthetic catchments. Rainwater from the roof of the main lobby flows from a rain leader into a decorative basin where it is piped to an underground cistern. The cistern, which holds 20,000 gallons, is used to irrigate the surrounding grounds during dry periods.

East Village opened in fall 2008, accommodates approximately 350 students and recently achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
