Project Summary

One of the things that struck me while I was participating in the Piedmont Project was the diversity of the faculty involved. I met and conversed with faculty members from a number of different colleges within the university, and from many different disciplines. It was indeed a thrill to be involved in meaningful dialogue with such a strong cross-section of the University. Clearly, problems of sustainability and environmental issues are best addressed through an interdisciplinary approach. Over lunch one day my Oxford College colleague, Dr. Jack Eichler, and I discussed how great it would be to have a truly interdisciplinary course on issues pertaining to sustainability, with all divisions of the college represented. Due to the small size of Oxford College, this was something we believed we could do. We envisioned a lecture series and seminar course around a central theme. Faculty from various disciplines (as well as guest lecturers) could take turns in presenting a lecture, and then small seminar groups would meet for discussion and hands on activities related to the topic. The first theme we have in mind is “Fossil fuels: Why are we so dependent on them and what are the ramifications?” Several faculty members have already committed to being involved I this course, including professors of anthropology, biology, chemistry, economics, English, geology, religion, and physical education. We hope that this course could be repeatable, with a different theme each year.
