Campus Crossings at Briarcliff solar PVAn array of 10 Schuco Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules have been installed on the roof of Campus Crossings at Briarcliff, located near the Sage Hill shopping complex. This luxury, off-campus housing designed for Emory’s graduate students is scheduled to open Fall 2009. Campus Crossings at Briarcliff will include energy saving technologies throughout. Upon completion, the property will obtain residential EarthCraft™ designation.

The solar panels will help power the common areas of this residential complex. The 2kW solar PV system will generate an estimated average of 224kWh per month of clean electricity.

Coal accounts for approximately 64 percent of the fuel mix used by utilities in Georgia to generate electricity (source: US EPA). By partially powering Campus Crossings at Briarcliff with 224kWh per month of solar-generated electricity, this new PV system will have these positive effects on our environment:
• Prevent an estimated 4,225 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere each year;
• Is comparable to about 4.5 barrels of oil not imported for a year; and
• Is the equivalent to roughly .44 acre pine forest storing carbon for a year.
